Giving Back to the Community
The Boulder City Police Protective Association (BCPPA), the collective bargaining agent for police officers and police sergeants in Boulder City, is comprised of 32 full-time sworn officers, one part-time officer, and four associate members. However, collecting dues and negotiating contracts are just a small part of the BCPPA.
As police officers, we often see people at their worse and our commitment to excellence doesn’t stop when our shift ends. The breadth of our community involvement with charitable and worthwhile endeavors should please many residents.
For example, Officer Craig Tomao, the Vice-President of the BCPPA, used 172 hours of his personal leave time to participate as a Liaison Representative in the Devil Pups encampment at Camp Pendleton, California. This program teaches young people, between the ages of 14 and 17, citizenship skills such as teamwork and self-discipline during a challenging 10-day program.
In addition to Officer Tomao’s personal sacrifice, the BCPPA donated $400.00 to sponsor a young person at this encampment. Officer Tomao was also instrumental in starting the annual “BMX is Not a Crime” event. He continues to volunteer countless hours to this worthwhile endeavor which has seen increased participation and enthusiasm with each passing year.
Recently, the BCPPA presented a $250.00 check to LVMPD Officer Terrence Cunningham as a donation to the 2008 Tour de Force Memorial Bike Ride. Last September, Officer Cunningham and hundreds of officers from throughout the country biked from the Pentagon to Ground Zero, NYC. The donations are used to assist the families of fallen public safety officers. The BCPPA has already voted to donate $300.00 on Officer Cunningham’s behalf for the 2009 Tour de Force Memorial Bike Ride.
The BCPPA also donates money to events such as Special Olympics Nevada and Relay For Life, to name a few.
Officer Scott Pastore and Detective Michelle Isham volunteer many hours of their off-duty time to the Law Enforcement Explorers. This successful program teaches young people life skills and exposes them to the challenges of law enforcement.
As members of the BCPPA, we share the same core values as the City of Boulder City, especially Integrity, Professional Excellence, and Caring Attitude. However, our core values did not come about because of a mandate by appointed or elected officials, but have been part of the law enforcement code of ethics for decades. Those of us who have chosen this profession care about our community.
We appreciate your support and look forward to keeping you informed of our collective efforts to maintain the excellent quality of life that each citizen deserves.
